Fournier was a designer at Sèvres (active from 1878 to after 1910), the illustrious French porcelain factory that had been founded in 1756 and created the first hard-paste porcelain in France. The factory, which had come under the control of the crown in 1759 and remained under the control of the state, continued production throughout the 19th and 20th centuries and still produces porcelain wares to the present day.
Fournier, who had begun work at Sèvres while the sculptor Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse was artistic director (1876 – 1887), inaugurating a period of successful stylistic and technical experimentation, was an important member of the design team. His work shows a coloristic virtuosity and an understanding of contemporary trends in art.
