JOHANNES JANSONNIUS,  publisher                  Amsterdam 1588 – 1664 Amsterdam

Planisphaerivm Brahevm Sive, Structura Mvndi Totivs,ex Hypothesi Tychonis Brahei In Plano Delineata [The Universe, after the theories of Tycho Brahe Depicted], from A. Cellarius’ Harmonia Macrocosmica, Amsterdam 1660-61.

Etching & engraving with original gouache and watercolor hand-coloring, heightened with gold. A brilliant impression in pristine condition, as published. This deluxe illustration of the astronomical theories of Tycho Brahe (1546-1601) was a pioneer in the recording and use of astronomical data. He developed a theory of the organization of the solar system in which all planets revolved around the sun, which in turn revolved around the earth.

By the time Jansonnius’ Planispherium was executed,  Kepler and Copernicus –using Brahe’s precise data – arrived at the correct  understanding that all of the planets, including the earth, revolved around the sun. Jansonnius’ elegant display represented the new interest in the  depiction of astronomical theory and the history of astronomical study. Even if by the 1660s the physical extent and organization of the solar system was now fully understood, the passion for astronomy, aided by technological developments in the manufacture of ever more powerful telescopes, made such elegant planispheres eagerly sought-after by amateur astronomers and collectors of astronomical literature.
