After PIETER BRUEGEL the Elder Eindhoven c. 1525 – 1569 Brussels
Three Caravels in a Rising Squall with Arion on a Dolphin.
Engraving and etching after Bruegel by Frans Huys (Antwerp c. 1522 - c. 1562). Published by Hieronymus Cock. From the series Sailing Vessels. New Hollstein 69, the second of six states.
A fine impression of this rare print. Some slight staining visible in the margins.
Bruegel’s series of ships, now rare in fine, early impressions, celebrates Dutch maritime activity. A tiny figure of Arion saved by dolphins presents a mythological reference as a connection to the Dutch as masters of ocean voyages.
